Sysinternals Suite Build 2007-11-09

20 11 2007

The Sysinternals Troubleshooting Utilities have been rolled up into a single Suite of tools. This file contains the individual troubleshooting tools and help files. It does not contain non-troubleshooting tools like the BSOD Screen Saver or NotMyFault. Microsoft acquired Sysinternals in July, 2006. Whether you’re an IT Pro or a developer, you’ll find Sysinternals utilities to help you manage, troubleshoot and diagnose your Windows systems and applications. If you have a question about a tool or how to use them, please visit the Sysinternals Forum for answers and help from other users and our moderators.

The Suite is a bundling of the following selected Sysinternals Utilities:

  • AccessChk: This tool shows you the accesses the user or group you specify has to files, Registry keys or Windows services.
  • AccessEnum: This simple yet powerful security tool shows you who has what access to directories, files and Registry keys on your systems. Use it to find holes in your permissions.
  • AdExplorer: Active Directory Explorer is an advanced Active Directory (AD) viewer and editor.
  • AdInsight: An LDAP (Light-weight Directory Access Protocol) real-time monitoring tool aimed at troubleshooting Active Directory client applications.
  • AdRestore: Undelete Server 2003 Active Directory objects.
  • Autologon: Bypass password screen during logon.
  • Autoruns: See what programs are configured to startup automatically when your system boots and you login. Autoruns also shows you the full list of Registry and file locations where applications can configure auto-start settings.
  • BgInfo: This fully-configurable program automatically generates desktop backgrounds that include important information about the system including IP addresses, computer name, network adapters, and more.
  • BlueScreen: This screen saver not only accurately simulates Blue Screens, but simulated reboots as well (complete with CHKDSK), and works on Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Server 2003 and Windows 9x.
  • CacheSet: CacheSet is a program that allows you to control the Cache Manager’s working set size using functions provided by NT. It’s compatible with all versions of NT.
  • ClockRes: View the resolution of the system clock, which is also the maximum timer resolution
  • Contig: Wish you could quickly defragment your frequently used files? Use Contig to optimize individual files, or to create new files that are contiguous.
  • Ctrl2cap: This is a kernel-mode driver that demonstrates keyboard input filtering just above the keyboard class driver in order to turn caps-locks into control keys. Filtering at this level allows conversion and hiding of keys before NT even “sees” them. Ctrl2cap also shows how to use NtDisplayString() to print messages to the initialization blue-screen.
  • DebugView: Another first from Sysinternals: This program intercepts calls made to DbgPrint by device drivers and OutputDebugString made by Win32 programs. It allows for viewing and recording of debug session output on your local machine or across the Internet without an active debugger.
  • DiskExt: Display volume disk-mappings
  • DiskView: Graphical disk sector utility
  • Diskmon: This utility captures all hard disk activity or acts like a software disk activity light in your system tray.
  • Du: View disk usage by directory
  • EFSDump: View information for encrypted files
  • Filemon: This monitoring tool lets you see all file system activity in real-time.
  • Handle: This handy command-line utility will show you what files are open by which processes, and much more.
  • Hex2dec: Convert hex numbers to decimal and vice versa.
  • Junction: Create Win2K NTFS symbolic links
  • LDMDump: Dump the contents of the Logical Disk Manager’s on-disk database, which describes the partitioning of Windows 2000 Dynamic disks.
  • ListDLLs: List all the DLLs that are currently loaded, including where they are loaded and their version numbers. Version 2.0 prints the full path names of loaded modules.
  • LiveKd: Use Microsoft kernel debuggers to examine a live system.
  • LoadOrder: See the order in which devices are loaded on your WinNT/2K system
  • MoveFile: Allows you to schedule move and delete commands for the next reboot.
  • LogonSessions: List the active logon sessions on a system.
  • NewSID: Learn about the computer SID problem everybody has been talking about and get a free computer SID changer, NewSID.
  • NTFSInfo: Use NTFSInfo to see detailed information about NTFS volumes, including the size and location of the Master File Table (MFT) and MFT-zone, as well as the sizes of the NTFS meta-data files.
  • PageDefrag: Defragment your paging files and Registry hives!
  • PendMoves: Enumerate the list of file rename and delete commands that will be executed the next boot
  • Portmon: Monitor serial and parallel port activity with this advanced monitoring tool. It knows about all standard serial and parallel IOCTLs and even shows you a portion of the data being sent and received. Version 3.x has powerful new UI enhancements and advanced filtering capabilities.
  • Process Explorer: Find out what files, registry keys and other objects processes have open, which DLLs they have loaded, and more. This uniquely powerful utility will even show you who owns each process.
  • Process Monitor: Monitor file system, Registry, process, thread and DLL activity in real-time.
  • ProcFeatures: This applet reports processor and Windows support for Physical Address Extensions and No Execute buffer overflow protection.

  • RegDelNull: Scan for and delete Registry keys that contain embedded null-characters that are otherwise undeleteable by standard Registry-editing tools.
  • RegHide: Creates a key called “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareSysinternalsCan’t touch me!0″ using the Native API, and inside this key it creates a value.
  • Regjump: Jump to the registry path you specify in Regedit.

Microsoft Officialy Opens @live.com Email Registeration!

18 11 2007

Microsoft has officially opened the much anticipated and well overdue registration for the new @live.com email addresses.

This minor update along with the rest of wave 2 of Microsoft’s Windows Live Suite allows users to now fully take advantage of Windows Live. Microsoft should have opened registration to the @live.com acronym when the company first started Windows Live, but nonetheless this is a welcome change.

The company now gives users a change and the ability to get away from the old “Hotmail” acronym and finally puts their email service in-line with the rest of the Windows Live Suite. The @live.com email acronym is one of many updates the company has planned for today, later tonight the company will be releasing updated final versions of Windows Live Mail, Messenger, Writer, Photo Gallery, and Family Safety.

Among the changes to the Windows Live Suite is one that those using Windows Vista x64 will now be able to install and use the entire Windows Live Suite (as well as the new unified installer) on your x64 based system. Also, Microsoft has revamped Messenger in terms of security and changed the user interface and gave it a new look. Microsoft has also updated Writer, Mail, and Photo Gallery to give it a more polished look and to give it the “Vista Feel” because the prior release(s) didn’t quite fit in with Windows Vista’s sleek user interface.

Stay tuned as we will have more in the next few hours as Microsoft launches the rest of the updates to Windows Live.

Also, feel free to get your new Windows Live ID and get the @live.com email address you always wanted but couldn’t have until now!

Windows Live 8.5 Final

18 11 2007

The final version of Windows Live Messenger 8.5 has been leaked (via mess.be) and is available for download. Microsoft has been cooking Window Live Messenger 8.5 to accompany the second wave of Windows Live releases scheduled for November.

This summer, the Redmond company debuted the second phase in the evolution of its cloud operating system. Consequently, new betas of the products and services reunited under the Windows Live brand umbrella began being available.

In early September, Microsoft unveiled the unified installer for Windows Live, and a plethora of new beta releases including Windows Live Messenger, Photo Gallery, Mail, OneCare Family Safety and Writer. Windows Live Messenger 8.5 debuted into beta in May this year. In September, Microsoft evolved the instant messaging client from Beta 1 to Beta 2 stage, and by the middle of the month was announcing that the second wave of Windows Live downloads will be made available in early November.

Well, there still is no official word from the Redmond company as to the finalization of Windows Live Messenger 8.5, but the IM client has been leaked and is available for download. At this point, it is clear that the official version from Microsoft will soon follow, but the company failed to provide any details in this respect.

As you can see from the adjacent screenshots, Windows Live Messenger 8.5, evolved from Beta, has moved from Build 8.5.1288.816 to Build 8.5.1302.1018. So far, there are little distinctions between the Beta 2 version of the instant messaging client and the final release. Windows Live Messenger 8.5 is the successor of Windows Live Messenger 8.1 made available in January with full Windows Vista support. Although both editions of the IM client are designed with Vista in mind, only Windows Live Messenger 8.5 is tailorfitted for Microsoft’s latest operating system.

Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1302.1018 is available for download via this link right here on KezNews.

Download Free Windows Vista Enterprise

18 11 2007

Microsoft is offering Windows Vista Enterprise as a free download in combination with the Office 2007 Professional System.

While all editions of the Windows Vista operating system can be test driven from anywhere from a month to 120 days, this copy of Vista Enterprise is limited to only 30 days. This coincides with the Initial Grace period of the latest operating system from Microsoft.

The limitation is associated with the whole Vista Enterprise and Office 2007 professional bundle. The marriage of Microsoft’s flagship products comes in the church of virtualization. The download Microsoft is providing is in fact nothing more than a pre-configured Virtual Hard disk. The Microsoft Office 2007 Professional VHD is essentially an installation of Windows Vista Enterprise with Office 2007 Professional deployed on top of the platform.

This is not the first time that Microsoft has made the bundle available for download, but the VHD was updated on November 5. “This VHD contains both the 30 day edition of Windows Vista Enterprise Edition and an evaluation of Office 2007 Professional which includes Publisher, Excel, Outlook, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, and Word. See how with these new platforms can simplify how people work together, find information and improve business insight, help protect and manage content, and reduce IT costs and improve security. Test drive today to experience how Windows Vista and Office 2007 work better together”, Microsoft informed.

All other SKUs of Windows Vista can have their Initial Grace period prolonged up two 120 days via the slmgr -rearm command. The same is not valid for the Enterprise edition of the operating system, which comes to the table with an entirely different activation mechanism. The various editions of the Office 2007 System are also available as stand-alone downloads 60 days trial versions.

Microsoft Office 2007 Professional VHD weighs in at a maximum of 2678.9 MB, coming with no less than 12 archives (238.4 MB each with one exception) and is available for download via this link.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate RC Availabe for Download

18 11 2007

Making headway with the development of the first service pack for Windows Vista, Microsoft has made available for download a new testing milestone of the refresh. On November 14, 2007, the upcoming service pack for Vista evolved into the Release Candidate phase.

However, as the label of the testing build indicates, the fully fledged RC is yet to come, as Microsoft is offering just a taste of the Vista SP1 Release Candidate. While initial reports related to the development of Vista SP1 pointed to the availability of a public version concomitantly with the first Release Candidate stage, this is not the case. But Microsoft did expand the testing pool in comparison to the beta launched in the last week of September.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate is build 6001.17042. Vista SP1 RC is up for grabs for over 15,000 testers. The first beta for the service pack was dropped into the laps of in excess of 12,000 testers, on September 24. Vista SP1 Beta Build 6001.16659 shipped only to participants in the testing process of the development milestones of Windows Server 2008 and Windows XP Service Pack 3. Vista SP1 RC can also be accessed exclusively via Microsoft Connect, although the Redmond company did slip up and produced signs indicating that the build would be opened to all MSDN subscribers.

The Redmond company failed to provide any additional details related to Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate Preview Build 6001.17042. Still, at this point in time, judging by the frequency at which test versions of the service pack have been progressively released, Microsoft is advancing at fast pace toward the final Vista SP1 planned for the first quarter of 2008, in tandem with Windows Server 2008. A public build of a pre-final version of Windows Vista SP1 remains but a promise from Microsoft, without any substance as of yet.

While it is clear that the service pack will eventually hit MSDN, it is still unclear if the company will open up a future test build of Vista SP1 to a much broader audience. Simultaneously with the drop of Vista SP1 RC, Microsoft declined to comment in any manner on the possibility of a public pre-final Vista SP1 (according to Mary Jo Foley), or a timetable for its availability.
